Will Your Artificial Grass Look Obviously Fake?
Most artificial grass doesn’t fail because it wears out.
It fails because it looks artificial.
Plastic shine in bright sunlight.
Flat, carpet-like texture.
One uniform shade of green with no variation.
You’ve seen it.
It’s what makes neighbours say,
“Oh… they’ve got fake grass.”
And for many homeowners, that’s the real regret.
That’s why natural appearance is the third standard every NeoGrass product must meet.
What We're Actually Looking For
Four things determine whether an artificial grass looks convincingly natural or obviously synthetic:
Colour variation
Real grass isn’t one colour. It has lighter tips, darker bases, seasonal variation, and natural inconsistency across the lawn. Artificial grass with a single, uniform green shade looks flat and manufactured — no matter how well it’s laid. We look for multi-toned fibres with genuine colour depth.
Fibre texture
Grass blades have shape and dimension. Thin, ribbon-like fibres catch the light in a way that reads immediately as plastic. Fibres with a more structured, blade-like profile scatter light more naturally and hold their appearance from multiple viewing angles.
Pile height
Too short and it looks like carpet. Too long and it looks unkempt. The right pile height for the application — whether that’s a manicured contemporary finish or a relaxed everyday lawn — matters as much as colour and texture.
Shine
This is the most obvious giveaway. A high-shine finish is almost impossible to disguise in direct sunlight. We assess sheen levels on every grass and avoid products that read as plastic, regardless of how they perform on other criteria.
What We Filter Out
Natural appearance is one of the standards every NeoGrass product must meet before it earns a place in our range.
Every grass we stock is assessed for natural colour variation, realistic fibre texture, appropriate pile height, and controlled sheen. If it looks synthetic — in person, in natural light, from a normal viewing distance — it doesn’t make our range.
The comparison image shows the difference. It’s visible immediately, and it’s exactly what we’re looking for when we assess products. A grass that passes in a showroom but looks plastic in a real garden isn’t good enough.
We also pay attention to how grasses photograph. Customers make initial decisions based on website images, so we’re careful to stock grasses that look as good in real life as they do on screen — not ones that photograph well but disappoint on arrival.
If a grass doesn’t meet our standard, it doesn’t make our range. Simple as that.
How to Judge Appearance for Yourself
No description or photograph replaces seeing a sample in your own garden, in your own light conditions. Artificial grass looks different in morning light versus afternoon sun, in overcast conditions versus bright days, and from a distance versus close up.
When your samples arrive, test them properly:
• Take them outside into natural daylight — not indoor lighting
• View them from a standing distance, not close-up
• Check them in both direct sun and shade
• Look for shine at different angles — turn the sample and see how it reflects light
• Compare the tone against any remaining natural grass borders
If it passes those tests in your garden, it will look right when it’s laid.

See It in Your Garden Before You Commit
Order samples and test them in natural daylight. That’s the only reliable way to know how a grass will look once it’s laid.
Our sample form includes a short quiz about your garden: the look you’re going for, how the space is used, and what matters most. We’ll use your answers to recommend which grasses to order before your samples arrive.
FAQs
It depends entirely on the product. Artificial grass with a single uniform colour, high-shine fibres, or a flat carpet texture will read as synthetic — particularly in natural light. Grass selected for colour variation, realistic fibre texture, and controlled sheen is significantly harder to distinguish from natural grass, especially from a normal viewing distance. Every grass in the NeoGrass range is assessed for these criteria before it earns a place in our range.
The most reliable test is samples in natural daylight. View them from a standing distance, in both sun and shade, and check for shine at different angles. A grass that looks convincing in those conditions will look convincing once laid. Photographs and showroom lighting can be misleading — your garden in natural light is the only honest test.
Modern artificial grass — particularly products selected for realistic fibre texture and colour variation — looks convincing at most viewing distances including close up. The products most likely to look synthetic close up are those with flat, ribbon-like fibres and uniform colour. We filter these out of our range for exactly this reason.
Four factors: natural colour variation across the fibres, a structured blade-like fibre profile rather than flat ribbon fibres, appropriate pile height for the application, and low sheen. These are the criteria we assess on every product before it earns a place in our range.
With a well-chosen product, correctly installed, most people cannot tell from a normal viewing distance — particularly as the grass settles and any initial newness fades. The grasses most likely to be identified as artificial are those with uniform colour and high shine. Our range is specifically selected to avoid both. Ordering samples and testing them in your garden before committing is the best way to judge for yourself.
Durability comes down to fibre density and pile structure. Our Signature Range — Halo, Vela, and Elia — represents the grasses we recommend most often when longevity is the priority. Each is built with dense fibres and bio-based backing for exceptional resilience. Order samples of all three and compare them side by side.
