5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Artificial Grass
1. It’s not 100% maintenance free
You may hear some people claim that artificial grass is ‘maintenance free’.
Nevertheless, this isn’t quite true. Fortunately, however, the maintenance that is required is minimal, and it’s far less than would be required for a real grass lawn. All it needs is the occasional brush to reinvigorate the fibres and to remove any debris. You should also make sure that you remove leaves from the fake grass as they can cause weed growth.

2. Artificial grass is free-draining
One of the major advantages of fake turf is that it will drastically improve your lawn’s drainage. Rainfall quickly drains through the perforated backing material of artificial grass to prevent puddling. It is so effective at draining liquid that up to 52 litres of water can drain through each square metre of grass, per minute.
3. Synthetic fibres can be made from three different types of plastic
Artificial fibres, known as the ‘yarn’, can be made from either nylon (polyamide), polypropylene or polyethylene. Each type of fibre has its strengths and weaknesses. Nylon is the strongest type of fibre and is ideal for high traffic, heavy use areas, but can be abrasive. Polypropylene offers good strength and resilience, but is susceptible to UV degradation. Polyethylene offers a good balance between strength and softness. The best types of artificial grass use a blend of nylon and polyethylene fibres, as do Aberdeen, Inverness or Arena. 4. A good-quality backing is very important for long-lasting fake grass
A vital part of an artificial turf is the backing. That’s because it holds everything together. The backing consists of a primary layer, to which the yarn is stitched, and a secondary layer, typically consisting of latex. This secondary layer acts as the glue that bonds the fibres to the primary layer . Without a good quality backing the fibres will break away, resulting in a failed artificial lawn.
5. Artificial grass can last for 20 years
Of course, it does depend on levels of usage, but if you look after your artificial lawn it can last for 20 years. This makes it fantastic investment in your property and the initial outlay of having a fake lawn installed is often recouped in the saved maintenance costs and increased property value.
