20mm Granite Chippings for Artificial Grass

20mm granite chippings are used to form a permeable sub-base in an artificial grass installation. The ‘sub-base’ is known as the layer of aggregates that are installed on top of the subgrade, or earth, prior to the installation of the laying course.
The sub-base material is the foundation of an artificial grass installation; it is what will give your artificial lawn structural stability.
A solid, well-compacted sub-base is crucial in providing sufficient strength to allow foot traffic and items of furniture to be placed upon the artificial lawn.
There are generally two types of sub-base used in artificial lawn installations: Type 1 or 20mm Granite Chippings.
Whether you use Type 1 or granite or limestone chippings really depends upon your needs.
Granite chippings are suitable for all types of domestic application and we highly recommend using this type of base if you have pets or existing drainage issues in your garden. The free-draining nature of the aggregate will allow rainfall, as well as dog urine, to quickly drain through the turf and down to the sub-grade (that is, the earth) that lies below the sub-base material.
However, for high foot traffic and commercial areas, we would recommend installing Type 1, due to the additional load-bearing capacity it offers.
A laying course, levelled to a depth of approximately 25mm, consisting of 0-6mm granite dust should be installed on top of the sub-base to provide a flat, smooth surface on which to lay artificial grass.
How much aggregate will I need for the sub-base?
We recommend that you install your laying course to a depth of 50-75mm, or 2-3 inches.
Our granite chipping are supplied in 850kg ‘bulk bags’, or ‘ton bags’, as they are also known.
To help you calculate how many you need, enter the total square meterage of your lawn area in the calculator, below.
How do you install the sub-base?
The sub-base material is levelled to the required depth, using a rake, across the entire lawn area, and then thoroughly compacted with a vibrating plate compactor.
To ensure adequate compaction, guide the plate compactor both up and down, and from side to side, across the entire surface of your lawn area.
How will my Granite Chippings be delivered?
Our bulk bags are shipped via a third-party, tail-lift, pallet courier. Delivery is within 5-7 working days.
For pallet deliveries, it is extremely important that your property can be accessed by a 7.5-ton lorry.
Pallets are lowered off the back of the lorry and manoeuvred by the driver to as near to your property as is deemed safe.
Delivery can only be made if the ground is flat and level. It must be free from gravel and uneven paving. If the ground is unsuitable, pallets may be left on the roadside/kerbside, at the driver’s discretion.
If deliveries cannot be made due to insufficient access or unsuitable offloading, or where incorrect/insufficient instructions have been provided, additional charges will be incurred.
Please note, if you are also ordering artificial grass, your goods will be delivered via separate couriers.
