7 Reasons to Install Artificial Grass at Your Holiday Home
Owning a holiday home, whether it is a static home, a seaside apartment, a large country house or something else entirely, is undeniably a luxurious asset, as those of us lucky enough to have one know all too well.
Whether it is the school holidays, Christmas or just a weekend break, having a property that you can retreat to, away from the stresses and strains of normal life, is wonderful.
According to The Daily Telegraph, one in ten UK residents owns more than one property and many of these property owners are using one of their residences as a regular holiday home.
But, of course, owning a holiday home does present its own problems. Owning a home that you spend very little time at means that maintaining your property can be difficult – and expensive, too, especially if you are having to hire the services of a professional to take care of your second home for you.
Luckily, there are ways in which you can reduce the burden of maintaining your holiday home, giving you more time to spend relaxing and having fun while you’re there – and that, of course, would have been your intention when you decided to take the plunge and buy the place.
In recent years, with the drastic improvement in the quality of artificial grass, many holiday home owners are choosing to install fake turf at their properties.
The various advantages of artificial grass make the decision a no-brainer for a lot of holiday home owners; when you take all the benefits into account, it’s little wonder that so many are now turning to artificial grass to transform their outdoor spaces.
In our latest article, we’re looking at these benefits in more detail, with our list of 7 reasons to install fake grass at your holiday home.
1. Artificial Grass Will Keep Your Holiday Home Low Maintenance
Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that you will be able to spend more than a few weeks a year at your holiday home.
This means that it is vitally important for your holiday home to be as low maintenance as possible.
The last thing you want when you arrive for your hard-earned break is to spend the first couple of days working in the garden.
One of the best ways to keep the garden at your holiday home as low maintenance as possible is to install artificial grass.
Unlike real grass, weeds won’t grow amongst the blades and, of course, it does not require mowing, either. This will save you the chore of having to deal with knee-high grass when you first arrive at your holiday home.
The whole idea of a holiday home is for it to be a welcome retreat, somewhere away from your normal working routine, so it’s important to ensure it remains that way.
2. Artificial Grass Will Reduce Your Holiday Home’s Maintenance Costs
Following on from our last point regarding maintenance, rather than maintaining the garden of your holiday home yourself, you might be using the services of a professional.
And, for those of you that are, you’ll know how expensive this can be over the course of a year.
Particularly when you don’t get to enjoy the benefits for a large part of the time.
By installing artificial grass alongside some low-maintenance plants, you can create a garden that will require nothing more than a quick tidy up, a couple of times a year.
This will drastically reduce the ongoing costs of your holiday home and remove the worry of your garden being in the hands of someone else.
When you finally arrive at your retreat, you’ll know that the lawn will look the same as it did when you were last there.
3. Artificial Grass Can Add Value to Your Holiday Home
Gardens play a big part in the valuation of a property.
According to the Huffington Post, a well-designed and maintained garden can add up to 20% to the value of your property.
You never know what the future could bring and one day you might decide to trade in that holiday cottage in Cornwall for a villa in the south of France.
Even if you have no intention of selling, it’s a wise move to ensure that your property’s value is as high as possible.
Artificial grass is a huge selling point for many homebuyers. The ultra-low-maintenance aspect, attractive looks and child- and dog-friendly nature appeal to a wide range of potential buyers.
Of course, the more demand you can create for your property, the higher the price you’re likely to sell it for.
In order to increase the value of your property, why not consider converting that tired, worn out grass into a lush, green artificial lawn?
4. Synthetic Grass Will Ensure Your Holiday Home Looks Stunning All Year Round
The problem with real grass is that it takes time and effort to keep it looking in the best condition.
And, even with the best of intentions – and efforts – you might be fighting a losing battle.
Regular mowing, aerating, weeding and feeding just might not be making a difference.
During the winter months, you’re up against waterlogged grass and frosty conditions, which can make your lawn unsightly and unusable.
In the summer, many lawns suffer from dry or scorched grass, and your lawn could look brown due to lack of water.
For many property owners, especially those with holiday homes, the dream of having lush green natural grass to welcome you is unfortunately unrealistic.
Artificial grass, on the other hand, looks just the same all year round. Come rain or shine, your holiday home will have a prize-winning lawn that is sure to be the envy of your neighbours.
5. Fake Grass Will Improve Drainage at Your Holiday Home
If the lawn at your holiday home suffers from poor drainage, you might be surprised to hear that, by installing AstroTurf, you’ll drastically improve the situation.
In the case of poorly draining lawns, we recommend that, prior to laying the grass, you install a permeable sub-base.
This permeable sub-base should be installed to a minimum depth of 50mm, using granite or limestone chippings, approximately 20mm in size.
This sub-base is then compacted using a vibrating plate compactor to form a strong, yet permeable, sub-base.
This will allow rainfall to drain freely through the perforated backing of the artificial grass, and through the sub-base material into the earth below, effectively creating a soakaway effect across your entire lawn area.
This will help prevent any standing water on your artificial lawn and, if your holiday home is in an area that is prone to flooding, it might just help minimise any potential damage to your property.
6. Artificial Turf is Ideal for Entertaining at Your Holiday Home
Having an artificial lawn installed will make those garden parties and BBQs all the more enjoyable for you, and any family or friends that also come along to your holiday retreat. It’s sure to make a lasting impression on your guests.
Unlike real grass, the best quality fake turf can withstand heavy foot traffic and won’t wear out or become patchy.
Having said that, be sure to keep the BBQ well clear of synthetic turf. Although most fake grass is fire-resistant, meaning it will not catch light, hot coals will melt the artificial fibres, causing permanent damage.
Fake turf is both pet- and child-friendly, too.
Your furry friend can use your artificial turf in exactly the same way they use the real thing and, as long as it has been installed correctly, they cannot rip up, dig through or damage the turf. There is no need to worry about them ‘doing their business’ on it, either, as urine and excrement will not stain or discolour a fake lawn.
Children love artificial grass, as it’s perfect for playing a wide variety of games and sports on. Parents will be glad to see there are no more mud or grass stains on either their children or their clothing, and the holiday home will stay pristine, too, as dirt and mud will no longer be tracked indoors.
Your entire family and your guests will be able to get so much more out of your holiday home with an artificial lawn.
7. Having Fake Turf Means That You Can Use the Garden of Your Holiday Home All Year Round
With no mud or mess, you can use an artificial lawn all year round, whatever the season or the weather.
Some holiday home owners might only get to their second property during the winter months and this may mean that the garden is a no-go area, due to the large amounts of rainfall we typically receive between autumn and spring, here in the UK.
As we have already mentioned in this article, the fake stuff is completely permeable and free-draining, meaning that you can use your lawn all year round without the fear of you, your pets or your children becoming caked in mud.
Having an artificial lawn installed at your holiday retreat will mean that you get the most out of your second property and you will be able to enjoy the garden space just as much as you do the indoors, whatever the season.
Those of us lucky enough to own our own holiday home know that when we arrive at our getaway, the last thing we want is to have to start doing any work.
And that is exactly where artificial grass can help.
But the benefits of low-maintenance AstroTurf don’t stop there. Its stunning good looks will transform and add value to your holiday home, whilst also being pet- and child-friendly, and it’s perfect for entertaining your guests.
