Rutland has the smallest population of any local authority area in the country. In terms of size, the City of Bristol, City of London, and Isle of Wight are smaller, but it still measures just 147 square miles.

The county is landlocked, but has at its centre a huge reservoir – Rutland Water – which has the largest surface area of any reservoir in England. And it doesn’t just provide water to the county’s people, it’s also a sports centre and nature reserve.

As well as choosing from a range of water sports, visitors can cruise the lake on the Rutland Belle. Fishing is also on offer – the trout are particularly popular.

The area is famous for its ironstone, and many of the buildings in the area are made from it. Among them is the 12^th-century Oakham Castle, a remarkably well-preserved example of Norman architecture. It’s famed for its collection of decorative horseshoes, given as gifts by first-time visitors. The oldest in the collection dates to 1470 and was a gift from Edward IV.
